In a twist that sounds more like a sci-fi movie than real life, a team of marine biologists has accidentally bred a species of fish capable of walking on land — and they’re not entirely sure how far it can go.
The discovery happened during a research project at the University of Queensland, where scientists were studying the lungfish — a rare species that already has primitive lungs and can survive out of water for short periods. The goal was to observe evolutionary traits over several generations.
Instead, what they got was something nobody expected.
The Mutation That Changed Everything
Over multiple generations in a controlled lab environment, researchers noticed some lungfish developing stronger pectoral fins and spending more time near the water’s surface. When one particularly bold fish flopped out of its tank and walked across the lab floor, the team realised something had changed.
“It wasn’t just wriggling,” lead researcher Dr. Helen Simmons explained. “It was using its fins like legs, moving deliberately from point A to point B. We’ve never seen anything like it in a modern fish.”
How It Can Survive Out of Water
Tests revealed that the new strain has a more efficient lung-like organ, allowing it to breathe air for hours at a time. Combined with its strengthened muscles, the fish can travel up to 20 meters across dry land before needing to return to water.
This adaptation could have major implications for evolutionary biology — and raises ethical questions about accidental genetic changes in controlled environments.
The Public Reaction
News of the “walking fish” has sparked a mix of fascination and fear online. Some social media users have jokingly dubbed it “the beginning of the end” for humans, while others are calling for it to be protected and studied further.
The university has already secured the tanks where the fish are kept, after multiple prank attempts by students wanting to “take one for a walk.”
What’s Next for the Walking Fish?
The research team plans to study how this new strain might interact with natural environments and whether it could survive in the wild. Dr. Simmons stressed that the fish will not be released into open waters anytime soon.
“This isn’t about creating a new invasive species,” she said. “It’s about understanding evolution in real time — and maybe rewriting what we thought was possible.”
